I Have Been Avoiding This For Months
Damn, my boss called and they have, without consulting me, scheduled me to take my Arkansas license test next week. I have had the study materials for months but told them I did not want to get licensed down there because the last few guys who have been, were traveling constantly. I refuse to travel constantly. I did it for the first 2 1/2 years I was with the company. Over that time I spent almost a year of the road(if you go by a regular 40-50 hr, 5 day work week, that the average joe works, I spent closer to a year and a half on the road). It is not worth the salary that I am payed to travel that much, it never was but, I had responsibilities before that forced my hand. I no longer have those responsibilities. I have my review coming up on Monday or Tuesday(3 years, where did they go) and will tell them that if they plan on working me on the road quite a bit once I get licensed in that state(I think I will be the only one, or possibly one of two investigators in our company licensed there) that there will have to be a substantial raise involved. I know how this conversation is going to go(I make a lot more than the next highest paid guy in my area, and they have been trying to dump salary for the last year or so), and am not hopeful. But, I guess I can always just refuse the work if they make it a constant thing. I have given up a lot of time in my life for my job(s), it has cost me a lot personally. I have found it just isn't worth the money(unless it is substantial and we can work out bonus for days over X amount on the road). I see this not going very well, but, maybe the bonus thing will work out, cuz I doubt the raise will.

Bestest luck in the raise/bonus negotiation. It's never a pleasant conversation, and I left at least one job because of how well it didn't go. But I have high hopes for you, Larry. I have high hopes it's going to go really, really well.
Personal time is the most important to me.. One good thing and bad at times is that my group isn't approved to receive over time.
If you give up something like "your time" thats important you will be miserable unless there are really really good perks!!
like make my car payment, pay mileage, gas, and $100.00 a day perdium sounds good :)
One thing you can do in the review is say.. I would love the opportunity but unfortunatly at this time due to personal reasons I am not allowed to travel out side of the state :)
Good luck with your review, Larry. It always sucks having to bring up the money issue. Bosses never want to pay more, and employees never want to take on more without it.
We need you around here more, though! I've been missing you.
Let us know what happens.
I think your boss would be a fool to not give you the riase. They obviously depend on you a lot and it would probably cost them a lot more to invest the time and money into hiring s new person to do all that you do.
I hope that they see it this way too. If not, ah well, that just gives you time to visit Toronto. :P
Don't give in, Larry! No job is worth being unhappy doing it... Except, of course, being a porn star. Maybe you could move to Cali and do that? Lots of riding, but it's the good kind, I hear...
Good luck, bud.
Hey Larry look alive, it looks like were sending Rita your way. Please excuse the rain.
The review *should* be an opportunity for you to offer some of your own feedback about the place in general. I always make sure my employer knows what I think needs fixing and how it could be fixed. Always better to present solutions instead of just problems. Besides, if they complain about you, then this is your chance to complain right back.
I know it sounds risky, but from what you've said of your relationship with your employer, you should at least be able to say that you raised your concerns and offered some alternatives.
Just my $0.02
What's the deal with all this job crap, dude? I'm practically BEGGING for a job these days, and you're bitchin about money! :P
You kid, I kid. Thanks for the well-wishes, but we'll see. You may still have all those tickets yet.
Did they kidnap you while you were in Arkansas????? Where have you gone??
He's out there in the Adirondaks being chased around by in-bred folk with banjos... Hehehe.
my money's on larry being abducted by large-breasted strippers and dragged out to vegas, where he performs 3 shows a night across the strip from celine dion.
